The New Boss: Younger Than the Old Boss

Kirk Sanford started his business career at age 24, running a start-up processing company selling debit card terminals to mom and pop retailers. He went on to launch Global Cash Access in partnership with Bank of America and First Data Corp. In 2006 at age 39, he was chief executive of Global Cash Access (NYSE:GCA), a Las Vegas (NV)-based gaming company with .36 billion market cap company.

Meet the new boss, younger than the old boss and is is one of approximately 140 executives age 40 or younger who are chief executive officers of publicly traded companies around the world, according to data compiled by Capital IQ. Of these, nearly 100 are located within the U.S., while another 40 or so lead companies headquartered in other countries. The youngest, Harry Vafias, CEO of StealthGas (GASS) in Athens, Greece, is only 28.

For generations, the corner office has been the domain of experience, occupied in literature and film by crusty old-timers like Ebenezer Scrooge or It’s a Wonderful Life’s Mr. Potter. In more recent decades, investors grew accustomed to fresher faces, as such young visionaries as Microsoft’s (MSFT) Bill Gates and Apple’s (AAPL) Steve Jobs helped lead the 1980s personal-computing revolution. Now, a new generation of 40-and-under CEOs offers proof that today’s young entrepreneurs can scale the corporate ladder, too.

Treat Yourself to an Alaska fishing Vacation

By , October 12, 2011 5:36 am

One of the best ways to get away from the daily routine and still stay in the United States is to travel to Alaska.  If you have never gone, you should definitely treat yourself to an Alaska fishing vacation.  Keep reading to learn some of the reasons why this is truly a special adventure.

You should know there are many different species of fish residing in Alaska’s waters.  King salmon is by far the most popular species.  However, you will find many more.  Some of the other options include silver salmon, Dolly Varden, and rainbow trout.

On your Alaska fishing vacation, you will also find the state offers many different rivers.  The Kenai River is one of the most popular in the world, holding the record for one of the largest king salmon catches ever.

Another popular destination is the Deshka River.  Plenty of king salmon and other fish make their runs through this river as well.  It is even legal to use salmon eggs for bait, so it is definitely a good spot for fishing – just check to see licensing requirements have not changed from season to season.

When you go on an Alaskan fishing vacation, of course you can stay in a motel or hotel like many of the standard vacations you have enjoyed.  However, you are an angler.  You should definitely consider staying in a lodge.

The good news is there are plenty of lodges available.  You can get basic accommodations since you will… Read the rest

What To Expect From A Hiking Tour Vacation

By , July 26, 2011 4:26 am

Perhaps you view hiking as easy or a “piece of cake” as some would say. Put on some boots, shorts and a shirt and off you go. How hard can it be? Well, walking is not necessarily the same thing as hiking. Ask any experienced hiker.

Now, some hikes may very well be that easy and those hikes should be. Not all hikes need to be a three or four day venture in the mountains, or navigating through forests or across streams and rivers. It is perfectly fine to just want some fresh air and exercise in nature’s surroundings.

But, if you want to expand your hiking there are some things you should consider in preparation.

An outdoor vacation such as hiking tours does not necessarily fit the “vacation” definition as other vacations may. Yes, you will enjoy yourself but do not approach hiking vacations in the same manner you would a vacation to the Caribbean.

First, you will want to get in shape. Try taking brief, more level hikes in your local area to prepare yourself for the longer hikes. If your lifestyle is fairly sedentary, you will want to slowly build your endurance for the more rigorous hikes. Pain is a top reason why many do not stick to an exercise plan, and that pain is often caused by doing too much too soon.

Obviously, your legs will bear most of the initial burden during the hike, but many muscles are… Read the rest

Cheap Travel Tips

By , August 29, 2010 11:20 am

Deciding on when to book is a bit of a gamble. While many tour operators will offer cheaper prices and early booking discounts, you may find that last minute deals are also available which will prove better financially.

There are many factors that you should take into account when deciding on when to book for maximum financial gain:

Are you flexible in terms of dates that you are prepared to travel?

Are you flexible in terms of destinations that you are prepared to travel to?

Will you be buying a package deal or will you be building your own package?

Are you considering a popular destination where many tour operators or flight companies travel?

Flexibility Is A Plus

Firstly, if you are flexible in terms of location and dates then you will almost certainly benefit from waiting until the last minute to book your holiday. Last minute deals are, of course, something that you cannot rely upon and if you are set on going to a certain destination at a certain date then last minute is far too risky. If you are planning on creating your own package then youneed to be aware that you are taking multiple gambles. For example, you need to consider your airfare, hotels and transport. Whilst you may get an excellent last minute flight, you may not be so lucky when it comes to the hotel or car hire. In fact, you may find that… Read the rest
